BLOG VIEW: An Unsuitable Boy – Karan Johar with poonam Saxena

An Unsuitable Boy Karan Johar

Being a dire admirer of KARAN JOHAR , mainly because of his way of talking, his unapologetic self and of course sarcasm and wit,  ( No, i didn’t forget his movies but KOFFEE WITH KARAN  and CALLING KARAN  wins over anytime ) I was way too excited to lay my hands on his debut book : AN UNSUITABLE BOY , which he co-authored with Poonam Saxena.

The first few pages got me pumped up and I wanted to know it all. His early childhood days made the book intriguing and raw . From being labelled as ‘pansy’ , his anger over it and running away from school with the help of Twinkle Khanna  (Though I still want to know why would she help him , felt a connection got lost over there! ) From his early college days to his relation with his parents and family , everything made it for a good start to the book.

As the chapter progressed, it delighted me to read about his college days and how he assisted Aditya Chopra on Dilwale Dulhania le Jaaenge and eventually discovered what he had in him. How he went on to create Kuch Kuch Hota hai and further My Name is Khan was another excerpt that I enjoyed reading not once but twice.

While he didn’t forget to appreciate and thank people in his life who made it worth everything which included Aditya Chopra, Yash Chopra, Salman Khan , ShahRukh Khan, Apoorva Mehta and many more , what made me feel ambivalent about this book is the on and on  “I DONT CARE’s  “ . The whole nation is aware of his bond Kajol and what made this book a little less special is how it gave an indirect message to his 25 year old friendship.  While every bit of Karan Johar is admirable, he gave one bit that made him a little less.   Besides the rants of his failed relationships, the book become a tad bit too much when he made sure to give credits to his own self for every start in the industry (A little modesty there , please! ).

The excerpts where he mentions  his depressive phase , the death of his father – Mr. Yash Johar , his denial in mentioning his sexuality, everything made me respect him all the more.

Overall, I’d give this book a thumbs up for the emotion roller coaster that it was and mainly for his final words – “Today, I finally feel liberated. I feel like I can take on anyone or anything!’ “  that just striked the right cord and made a lot more sense to every part of this book, every word and every action done and said.
